Godard de Ruiter is sinds 2012 neurochirurg. In 2003 heeft hij cum laude zijn dokterstitel behaald aan de Universiteit Leiden. Daarnaast studeerde hij in hetzelfde jaar af in Biomedische Wetenschappen. In 2004 en 2005 werkte hij twee jaar op de afdeling neurochirurgie van de Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota, in de Verenigde Staten, waar hij onder andere meewerkte aan de ontwikkeling van een multichannel zenuwbuis als onderdeel van zijn promotieonderzoek. Hij heeft zijn opleiding tot neurochirurg deels in het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum gedaan en deels in het Haaglanden Medisch Centrum (HMC), waar hij op dit moment ook werkzaam is.
Godard is gespecialiseerd in wervelkolom- en perifere zenuwchirurgie. Hij werd neurochirurg omdat het zenuwstelsel, als aansturing van het bewegingsapparaat, hem altijd al bijzonder heeft geïnteresseerd en het – vaak minutieus – opereren hem fascineerde. Maar hij werd arts vanwege de menselijke kant van zijn vak, hij graag mensen begeleidt in hun ziek zijn en zich daar altijd maximaal voor wil inzetten. Naast wervelkolomfixaties (spondylodeses), verricht hij ook complexe operaties aan perifere zenuwen (waaronder zenuwreconstructies, zeldzame compressiesyndromen en zenuwtumoren).
