General Surgery includes all diseases that do not fall under another surgical specialisms, this is why General Surgery is the core of all surgical specialties. The general surgery department within Acibadem specializes abdominal wall hernia’s (eg groin hernia, umbilical hernia’s, incisional hernia’s), gallstone disease and anal problems (proctology) such as hemorrhoids. Our team consists of 2 surgeons (Dr. Surya Biere and Drs. Dashti Faraj) who are specialized in these conditions.

The large number of treatments within the (general) surgery department is performed by a dedicated team that also consists of permanent doctor’s assistants, nurses and surgical assistants who have a lot of experience with this problem.

The first consultation can usually take place the next day after referral from the general practitioner. The waiting time until the operation is a maximum of 2 weeks. Our aim is to make your visit efficient and not too burdensome for you: you will have to deal with 1 permanent surgeon who has time and attention for you and who does the first consultation, treatment and aftercare at the outpatient clinic; any additional examinations such as an ultrasound can often be done on the same day; the doctors use keyhole surgery techniques (laparoscopy), which means that the patients often have less pain after the operation and recover faster.

Your treatments:

  • Patients with gallstone disease are operated on by means of keyhole surgery and often stay overnight in one of our luxurious single rooms.
  • Patients with inguinal hernias are operated on as day treatment within our Inguinal Hernia Center where the care is specifically focused on this condition according to the latest scientific insights.
  • Many people suffer from anal complaints. For some of them it is a barrier to go to the doctor about this. But often the treatments are simple and very effective, so that people often get rid of their complaints quickly. In addition, these treatments may immediately during the first consultation. This does not require any preparation such as bowel cleansing (laxation).
  • In addition, outpatient operations are also performed under local anesthesia for e.g. swelling of the skin (including fat bumps, sebaceous glands) and ingrown toenails. These can be done directly during the office hours or, if desired, take place at a later time.

FAQ

What is the difference between hemorrhoids (hemorrhoids) and skintags (Marisken)?

Hemorrhoids and skintags are often mentioned in the same breath. Skintags are innocent skin flap around the anus. They do not hurt. They are in the way and can cause difficulty for hygiene care. Cosmetics can also be a reason to have them removed. Hemorrhoids are swelling bodies that are covered with mucous membrane and are in the anus, of course you also have hemorrhoids on the edge of the sphincter, or hemorrhoids that protrude.

What complaints do they cause?

A skintag is usually not painful and gives no complaints, sometimes because it causes hygiene problems, it can cause itching. Hemorrhoids, with applied pressure can cause pain, itching and burning sensation around/within the anus..

How are hemorrhoids and skintags treated?

Depending on the size of the hemorrhoid, the treatment is almost always done by placing rubber bands (rubber band ligation). Depending on how extensive the hemorrhoids are, treatment can vary between 1-4 sessions. If that does not work, there are other operations such as hemorrhotectomy, hemorrhope surgery and the HAL-RAR procedure. The treatment of skintag consists of the surgical cutting away of the skintags.

Does the treatment of hemorrhoids and skintag hurt?

Placing the elastic bands does not cause pain. However, the patient experiences afterwards a feeling of pressure around the anus. Removing the skintags will not hurt. This is due to the anesthetic, but after the anesthesia has worn off, the wound can cause pain. This is the main discomfort of the operation. Of course, the pain can be suppressed with strong painkillers.

Can the hemorrhoids and skintags return?

Pressure-increasing moments such as constipation can cause the hemorrhoids and skintags to come back or develop in new places around the anus. The easy passing of stools, dietary measures and enough water intake will reduce this chance.
