After my residency, I moved to Germany for a fellowship in complex stone treatment. After this, I started working as a urologist in the Amsterdam UMC, where I was mainly involved in endourology (treatment of stones and tumors via the natural urinary tract) and kidney cancer.
The treatment of kidney stones has since become a real passion. Not only can you treat kidney stones with surgery where you see immediate results, but you can also try to prevent new stones in the long term with medication or lifestyle advice. Nonetheless, general urology is also very interesting. You can accompany a patient during the whole process (from diagnosis, over a possible (surgical) treatment till the follow-up). In this way you can really build a bond with your patient. Since I attach great importance to good patient contact, urology is the ideal specialty for me.
