I studied medicine at the University of Utrecht. After graduating I worked for some time as ANIOS orthopedics in Sittard. Subsequently, I started training as an Orthopedic Surgeon at the Leiden University Medical Center and the Haaglanden Medical Center in The Hague, where I have been working as an Orthopedic Surgeon since 2003. Since 2023 I have also been working in Acibadem. My focus, in addition to foot and ankle surgery, is on hips. I am specialized in implanting a patient’s hip replacement via the anterior approach. But patients can also come to me via the anterior approach for extensive repair surgery of the hip. In 2009, orthopedic surgeon De Witte, affiliated with the General Municipal Hospital in Aalst (Belgium), taught me a new technique for hip replacement operations: the anterior approach. We operate on the hip via the groin through the space between the upper leg muscles. The big advantage here is that no muscles need to be loosened from the hip, so that patients can walk faster, usually within 4 weeks, without any help.
Less stiff and shorter period plaster
Forefoot surgery and surgery for deformity of the big toe (hallux valgus) have my special interest. For several years, hallux valgus surgery has been increasingly performed abroad with a minimal scar (percutaneous). In 2013 – after training in Germany – I introduced this technique in The Hague.
Research on hip replacement
As a researcher I am involved in several studies on hip arthroplasties. We use a special radiological technique to examine the fixation (attachment) of various hip implants. Normally you can only see after 10 years whether a prosthesis remains firmly in place. With the techniques we use in this research, you can already say after 2 years whether a prosthesis is good. This research is therefore also important for the new developments of new hip prostheses.
