After completing his training as an internist and starting his medical career in the northern Netherlands, he moved to Utrecht to work as a gastroenterologist. There, he worked at both University Medical Center Utrecht and the Central Military Hospital. Until his military retirement in 2017, he served with the Ministry of Defense. An experience that has strongly shaped his pragmatic, can-do attitude and flexible way of thinking. At University Medical Center Utrecht, his clinical focus was initially on liver diseases (hepatology). His clinical work and research now focus primarily on patients with complex nutritional problems. Together with his team, he supports patients through this intensive process, whilst also conducting research, publishing and lecturing on specialized techniques for enteral nutrition (tube feeding). Within the University Medical Center Utrecht, he also held various additional roles, including that of medical manager of the gastroenterology outpatient clinic and deputy trainer.
