Prof. dr. Bart van Hoek, M.D., Ph.D., was trained as internist and hepatologist in University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), Groningen, the Netherlands, and as gastroenterologist and hepatologist (GIH) in the Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN, U.S.A. and Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC), Maastricht, the Netherlands, with liver disease (hepatology) as main area of interest. From 1993-2023 he worked in the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), Leiden, the Netherlands as gastroenterologist and hepatologist (in 2009 he became professor of hepatology at Leiden University). As medical director he led the liver transplantation program he had helped set up 30 years earlier and was member of the management team of the transplant department. He trained GIH specialists, nurse practitioners and physician assistant, medical and biomedical students.  He is still connected to the LUMC for liver and transplant research  with his PhD students. He (co) authored many scientific publications and PhD theses, and was a board member of several scientific societies and organizations in the field of gastroenterology, hepatology  and transplantation (like Eurotransplant and Dutch Liver-patient Organization), and advised patient organizations in these fields. He advocates active patient participation in care, care organization and research.

Bart van Hoek was editor and co-author of the Dutch  hepatology textbook Leverziekten (Bohn Stafleu van Loghum, Houten, 2009) (with Janssen HLA and Drenth JPH) and wrote chapters in several other books (one of the first was Organ Transplantation, Long-Term Results (ed. Paul L.C. & Solez K.; Marcel Dekker Inc, New York, Basel, Hong Kong, 1992). He also wrote chapters for many books of the Boerhaave Courses (Leiden, Netherlands) and for several editions of the Dutch Liver Week. He was and is active as reviewer for many scientific medical journals and form 1994-2009 was member of the editorial board of the journal Liver Transplantation. Since 2021 he is member of the editorial board of the  Journal of Clinical and Translational Hepatology.
